Cartographer

2026

This one was a sprint project from one of my senior design classes.

The brief was a fictional travel brand called Cartographer, built for a very specific kind of traveler. Someone who explores on foot, or by bike, who treats a trip like a research project instead of a checklist. Someone who wants to find the place nobody's posted about yet, not the one with the longest line for a photo.

Every other travel app right now falls into one of two camps. Either it's useful but ugly, a cluttered dashboard of pins and prices. Or it's beautiful but vague, all mood and no direction. Cartographer had to live in the gap between those two. Functional enough to actually plan a trip. Human enough to still feel like discovery.

So the whole identity got built around the idea of an explorer's notebook. Something worn in. Something that feels more like a personal archive than an app.

The logomark leans into that idea directly, a compass-meets-topography shape that reads almost like a fold in a map. It works as a standalone vertical mark for smaller spaces, and stretches into a bold horizontal lockup for headers and signage.

The type pairing carries the same tension the brand is built on. A humanist display face with calligraphic movement, next to a bold, utilitarian typeface that reads like a map legend. One brings the human hand back in. The other keeps everything grounded and legible.

And the palette stays intentionally earthy and desaturated, the kind of colors that feel found rather than designed, with just enough contrast to stay sharp in the field.

Cartographer isn't a real business. But the problem it's solving is real: how do you build a tool for discovery that doesn't flatten the whole point of discovering something yourself.
